EU261 is a European Union regulation that provides protection for air passengers in the event of flight delays, cancellations, or denied boarding. Understanding your rights under this regulation can help you claim the compensation you're entitled to.
What is EU261?
Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 establishes common rules on compensation and assistance to passengers in the event of denied boarding and of cancellation or long delay of flights. It applies to all flights departing from an EU airport, and to flights arriving at an EU airport operated by an EU airline.
Your Rights Under EU261
Depending on the length of your flight and the delay, you may be entitled to compensation ranging from €250 to €600 per passenger. The compensation amount is determined by the distance of your flight:
- All flights up to 1500km: €250
- All intra-EU flights of more than 1500km and all other flights between 1500km and 3500km: €400
- All flights not falling under the above categories: €600
When You're Eligible for Compensation
To be eligible for compensation, your flight must meet the following criteria:
- The delay must be 3 hours or more at arrival time
- The flight must depart from an EU airport or arrive at an EU airport and be operated by an EU airline
- The delay must not be caused by extraordinary circumstances
How to Claim Your Compensation
You can claim your compensation directly from the airline, but many passengers find it easier to work with a claims management company like ClaimBeacon. We handle all the paperwork and communication with the airline, so you can focus on your travel plans.
